DreamClix: The Transformers
(07/05/2010)

The Transformers DreamClix HeroClixThe Transformers license is an interesting beast. You've got a fairly rich history of robots and backstory, yet we haven't really seen any games that uses The Transformers properly (although I've heard that the War For Cybertron Xbox 360 game is quite spectacular). So could The Transformers work in some sort of Clix form? I think it could, but it would definitely be tricky.

DreamClix is a series of articles dedicated to new Clix properties we'd like to see in the future. These new properties should mostly be in their own world, with no crossover / compatibility to HeroClix or other Clix games (we don't want to see Pikachu in our Avengers vs JLA HeroClix matches, thank-you-very-much).

SCULPTS
For starters, each robot should be available as a static sculpt -- this figure cannot physically transform. Any figure with moving parts is simply too expensive to make, and a collectible game like TransformersClix needs to be very price conscious to succeed. $5.00 per figure just isn't going to work here. That being said, having some of the arms moveable isn't too bad of an option -- we already saw this with the Kingdom Come Batman Sentry figure, and this type of movement looks very good on the Heroes of Cybertron figures.

BASE
Standard robots like Megatron should be placed on a double-base, to represent their larger size and width. Simply having a robot on a base isn't enough; for a game like TransformersClix, the overall size must be considered. Larger figures like MetroPlex or Omega Surpreme can be placed on a larger base, while smaller robots like Laserbeak can be placed on a single base. If humans are created, they too can be placed on a single base.

TEAM ABILITIES
The Transformers DreamClix HeroClixI'd like to see more than just an "Autobot" or "Decepticon" symbol on these bases. In the Transformers universe, many figures are broken up into sub categories of their own. For example, the "Constructicons" should have their own TA, and so should the "Technobots". Perhaps Wizkids could even assign "ranks" the figures to represent a TA. Optimus Prime and Megatron could be a "Leaders" while Starscream and Iron Hide could be "Officers". There definitely seems to be a lot of wiggle room for this one.

But what about transforming? I've got a pretty good idea about that one...

Your Comments:
Then we thought about the alt modes to make the set affordable the vechicle would have to be on standard or peanut bases (like the star trek sets). there would be easy ones like cars, tanks and planes but how would you do megatrons gun mode we thought that you would have four different figures holding Megtron (those that did in the TV series)
Common - Skywarp,
Uncommon - Soundwave,
Rare - Starscream
Super Rare/LE - Optimus Prime.

Other non combatant alt modes like Reflector (the camera) again referring to the cartoon it would have to be Thundercracker to hold him.

Soundwave/Blaster and the tapes could be used as artifacts!?!?

Posted by: Coptur on 7/31/2014 4:47:32 AM
Holy crap! I have literally been putting this exact thing together over the last week or so! Only you thing you have in your article that I didn't think to include in what I've been working on is the Energon cube system, which I love by the way. I'm very excited that someone else has the same idea as me, and better! I would really love if they did make some Transformers clix, especially if they did them the justice they deserve. Thanks for the article, and long live Peter Cullen, the one and only true Optimus Prime! Till all are one.

Posted by: James on 7/29/2014 2:47:13 PM
Don't forget Transformers was a comic book too!! I like the idea. Someone mentioned TMNT too, and also love that. They started out as a comic book so I'm all for that.

Posted by: Nana on 7/29/2014 1:46:58 PM
I really like the idea of making the sculpts in scale, much larger that human characters. You might be able to get away with the scale of the Pacific Rim robots.

Single larger blind box like Pacific Rim and Star Trek ships might work.

The real question is, can WK convince Hasbro that it would be mutually beneficial to create these.

Posted by: superfriend on 7/29/2014 7:29:52 AM
I think with the "Morph" mechanic that the new Hank Pym has and the "vehicle" mechanic that is coming out with the new Batmobile, I think Transformers is closer to a reality. You can now have a vehicle that changes into a giant robot. And with the "Split/Merge" mechanic you can even make a Constructicon, Maximal, etc colossal.

Posted by: Benjamin on 8/5/2012 9:49:52 PM
@aaron: I completely agree. Please note that this article was published July 2010... a full 6 months before DC 75th was released. Heck, the first Beast Boy preview didn't even hit the internet until November 2010!

Posted by: The Le on 7/11/2011 8:30:45 AM
Until recently the question of how to show Transformers being able to switch between modes was in question. I think heroclix answered that question nicely with their most recent Beast Boy figure. Beast has two alternate forms with the same number of clicks for each form. When you want to switch one form for another you simply use a power action and the new form is set to same click as the one currently in play. It is simple and would work. At least that is my opinion.

Posted by: aaron on 7/11/2011 8:27:43 AM
YES YES YES!!! I haven't gotten into the CLix scene really because I'm not a big superhero guy. I LOVE Transformers. I have the Crimson Skies sets but no one plays that game anymore. Too bad, 'cause it was awesome once you got the hang of it. I'd invest far too much money into a Transformersclix series...so let's do it!

Posted by: Mekanikol on 5/16/2011 11:28:15 PM
Huh... That's cool! Why the hell not? MechWarrior was on the clix system, and the idea's accessible. Very well thought out.

Posted by: MEsch on 11/8/2010 9:26:25 PM
I would love to see The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and so on as Heroclixs. They would be perfect for the game. Especially if each came in its own boxed set. The Transformers would be cool. My idea for the "transforming" element would consist of two Star powers. One power would always be in play in one form and the other in the alternate mode. As an example a player states Starscream is transforming into jet mode and gains running shot but in robot mode has incapacitate (Null Rays) Anyway that is just my opinion.

Posted by: Aaron on 8/3/2010 12:11:03 PM
Brilliant concept. Really like the idea.

Posted by: JDKenada on 7/28/2010 6:58:34 PM
tbh I like the transformers but i don't think they belong in heroclix, what use would I have for a cassette mode Rumble(blue lol) in the battle field?

Now stuff like Turtles, Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, Visionaries and even the Centaurians can work.

Posted by: Coptur on 7/27/2010 8:02:05 AM
Would love to have TFclix. But I am totally against the two sculpts for transforming idea. A friend and I already argued that. The Horrorclix 'flip' mechanic would work far better for transforming than the 'AlterEgo" mechanic or the 'Battlefield Promotion' mechanic for individual transformations. Now for gestalts, the 'AE' mechanic works great, modified so that when they stop powerlinking the individual pieces take a click or two of unavoidable damage. And I think single bases for normal sized bots, double for gestalt sized and city bots and planet bots get colossal bases. Damage symbols can be used to represent size on the single bases.

Posted by: azraelklk on 7/18/2010 10:43:43 PM
whats the prob. with megatron teaming with thanos hell with 80's clix ive had cobra commander team with doom going aginst he-man

Posted by: jack on 7/12/2010 7:38:27 PM
Ok, i've always said keep any new games at arms length as far as clix is concerned; but making this particular one fully compatable would be awesome!!!
I'd hate for ironman to get taken down by a team up between Captain Kirk and a Care Bear. but seeing Supes get chewed up by Grimlock is something anybody would love to see!
They have multiple comic lines and have crossed over into Marvel at least once in recent years so i am definately all for this one; although it is the only exception to the rule as far as im concerned.
4 fig booster with one good guy and one bad guy in both forms and in clear packaging is the only way to go with it for my likings though

Posted by: Ste on 7/8/2010 9:06:37 PM
personally creating transformers clix would ruin heroclix completely for me. its like creating disney clix. like buzz lightyear could really take on ironman. its the same basic concept. megatron fighting along side thanos. YEAH RIGHT!

Posted by: theo on 7/8/2010 2:23:24 AM
Now we are talking. I would love to see a band of us get together and nudge the clix folks into looking at non marvel and dc properties for future sets. the possibilites are pretty much endless. I admit that I am pushing for a new indy clix set in part because i loved the old danger girls but cant play em much due to rules and their sucky defenses. however maybe some sets like the jonah hex set could fix that problem.

Posted by: inspired stranger on 7/6/2010 1:27:50 PM
hellz yeah now theres a man committed to the cause

Posted by: jack on 7/6/2010 1:05:11 PM
@Jack: I ripped a SENTINEL off of it's quad-base, and used it for pictures -- that's what you're seeing in my photos. I also broke apart a double-base figure for the same purpose. I wanted to give the reader an idea of what a "TransformersClix" would look on the battelfield.

The Dinobot you see is an original G1 Transformer toy, while the others are from the "Heroes of Cybertron" toy line as mentioned on page 1 (they're a perfect scale for my demonstration since they have the same height as Giant figures).

I'm not afraid to tear apart my figures to give you guys a good article!

Posted by: The Le on 7/6/2010 1:01:42 PM
size matters yes women say it doesnt but we all know the deal, that being said i dont have a problem with the scale of my clix's that much as long as theres intacations that there rip roaring giants i care not. now it would be a fare deal to list most of them as giants and save the main guys for colossails. now how many points is your soundwave le? (less than)he's my fav(greater than)(less than)well..next to starscream(greater than)

Posted by: jack on 7/6/2010 12:30:06 PM
Please note that HEROCLIX isn't to scale with one another, and there seems to be no problems there. For example, giant figures like Giant-Man and Colossal Boy should be MUCH larger than that. Not to mention GALACTUS should also be physically larger. As long as the sculpts are good, then 100% "accurate scale" won't really matter.

Posted by: The Le on 7/6/2010 10:15:56 AM
Personally scale for me is a huge factor. Just a comment... if WECA can't get the scale right, don't do it at all! For me scale is one of the crucial elements I consider a big thing in this hobby of mine. Just a thought... if Phoenix Force modded a... let's say an X-men character sculpt of Kitty Pride with all her "glory" (wink, wink) at 6 inches or bigger, would you buy it for what it's worth? Maybe as an action figure, but not as a heroclix. So I would disagree w/ MechanicalCHAOS. SCALE DOES MATTER, well, to me that is :-)-

Posted by: Ianator on 7/6/2010 5:59:28 AM
I think it's important to note that scale DOES NOT MATTER. Technically, nearly every figure we have that is giant, big, or colossal are not the same scale as regular heroclix figures. Example: All regular giant figures (in their comic portrayals) would be as big as any colossal figure if you were to make them to scale. On the same line of thinking, figures like Anti-Monitor should be at least the size of Galactus, whereas figures like the Sentinels should be at least twice as large to match the scale of heroclix.

Anyway, the point is that scale isn't that necessary. I will agree that making most transformers as giants is a good idea, due to their reach. And I have to disagree with you Jack, about most transformers being 8ft tall. It all comes down to what medium you take your information from. Characters like Bumblebee and Jazz may be 8ft, but characters like Soundwave and many of the other transformers are the same height as Megatron, or Optimus. Also, if you want to switch gears, in the comics when transformers got into fights, they would fall into building like we land on bean bags. Now your talking about the average transformer being 50ft tall.

Posted by: MechanicalCHAOS on 7/6/2010 12:22:00 AM
i had to go old school rpg on these 80'sclix peeps there only the first batch a 600 point team now i aint got the plastics yet so for tops i printed out some images but i hack and dicicted my old doubles and pieced them together now heres what i got:
Snakeeyes:55pts.,ralph:111pts,ash:84pts,toxic avenger:141pts,loin-o:68pts,and he-man:140pts anyone got any ideas for new peeps and im highly excited to see what LE does with the transformers

Posted by: jack on 7/5/2010 10:10:00 PM
thats not true lord most of them where no bigger than eight feet tall they would all be giants yes, but the only two huge ones would bre megatron and optimus prime thats not rue either cause you would have to do devastator and he would be anti moniter size. it just tepends on who your going to bring in im deasling with a similer issue wit my 80'sclix
