HeroClix Star TrekWIZKIDS/NECA ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH CBS CONSUMER PRODUCTS TO DEVELOP STAR TREK® GAMES

[Jun 8, 2010]
(Hillside, NJ) – WizKids/NECA and CBS Consumer Products today announced that they have entered into an agreement wherein WizKids/NECA will create HeroClix branded games to be sold both physically and digitally, set in the Star Trek universe, including all of the Star Trek television shows and Star Trek feature films.

Star Trek changed the way people think about the future,” said WizKids/NECA President Lax Chandra. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to marry our innovative game design and exceptional miniatures with the incredibly rich Star Trek franchise.  We believe HeroClix and the Star Trek Universe are ideally suited for cooperative gaming and table top miniature simulation and will speak to gamers in a new and compelling way.”

The first WizKids/NECA Star Trek game will release around Christmas, 2010 with additional expansions to follow.

About WizKids/NECA:

(NECA), WizKids/NECA is a New Jersey-based game developer and publisher dedicated to creating games driven by imagination. Clarification from Wizkids Justin Ziran: "There will be a number of games - Spaceship based clix combat game, not compatible with HC & a self contained co-operative game with clix elements through out."

Just a side note: this sounds an awful lot like my previous article, DreamClix: Star Trek!

Your Comments:
I doubt it will just be ships on clix bases. Star Trek is more about the charaters and how they interact. Clix based ships will be excellent, but without the charaters behind them I do not see how it can sell (even to us hardcore Trekies).

Ships? Characters? Or Both?

It is unlikely that Star Trek Clix is compatible with the current HeroClix, which is a good thing. There are plenty of Star Trek fans that will get into this, espeically old-school Star Fleet Battles groupies... which includes me. We Trek fans are willing to pay top dollar for a decent Trek game, and I have faith that Wizkids will deliver!

I only hope its compatable with hero clix. but i think we all know better than that unless neka learned from the whiz kids mistakes.

I'll probably only get it if it's released in an "Action pack" theme packaging.

Please tell me this is another sick joke like the Disney Clix April Fools thing (which is honestly a better idea). Pretty please...

Not heroclix? Ehhhh...

So, it's not clear if this will be miniatures of bipeds or ships. My first foray into gaming was FASA's Star Trek III Starship Combat Tactical Simulator. If it's ships I'm all in! If it's compatible with Heroclix, I'd like to see it, but I'm sure I'll buy them. :) The best game would be something like Battlestations by Gorilla Board Games. In that one, there are multiple maps: one for the space battle and more to represent what is going on inside the ship (moving from station to station on the bridge, battling boarding parties, and running to the weapons console or airlock to launch shuttles/fighters.

Apparently the semi-official word (I've seen it referenced as official but without citation) elsewhere is that they won't in any way be compatible with Heroclix, which effectively ends my interest. I certainly understand the ship element being its own affair, but I wasn't interested in the Pirates or Star Wars constructable models games and I wouldn't care any more for a Star Trek ship game even if the ships were on clickable bases.

If there are to be Star Fleet, Klingons, etc. on clix bases I would want them 100% compatible with Heroclix.

It's not a terrible bit of news, though, as it wasn't as if I needed any more product to drain away cash anyway. :)

I hope they learned from the past and make every expansion 100% compatible from here on out. Not doing so is what killed the original Wizkids. Too many games that couldn't be played together. I hope this means we will see Star Wars one day.

I can really see a clix based ship combat game working - depending on the exact rules of course.

I really don't see how they could provide heroclix compatibility but perhaps an action pack or two just for fun?

Posted by: Phyl on 6/8/2010 10:30:49 AM
While I understand that some, thinking in terms of venue play and unwanted mixing, may not want it to be Heroclix compatible I'm fine with it. Indeed, if it's NOT 100% compatible the likelihood that I'd buy into it would plummet.

Looking at them as a series of characters - ignoring most ship-based combat elements - I'm not seeing a need for an overhaul of Clix mechanics to adapt it to Trek.

Excellent! Spock and Batman on the same HeroClix team! ;)

Now Kirk can fight Picard. Poor Jon Luc.
