Review: Thor's Mighty Chariot
Eric Schaen
07/29/2009

You just can’t keep a good game down!  Heroclix returns from the land of canceled games and I, for one, couldn’t be happier about that.  Heroclix players who attend the San Diego comic con were thrilled to learn that Thor’s Mighty Chariot was available at the con and is now available for pre-order. The much anticipated Hammer of Thor set will be coming out this fall.

So with this great news, here is a review of the first official preview character - Thor’s mighty Chariot.

There is a lot of stuff going on here!  First off, let’s discuss the abilities of Thor’s Chariot.  The transporter, duo Attack, and indomitable abilities are all accessible to this character. This gives the character some nice options. Transporter, of course, will allow goldilocks to use the move and attack ability and bring a teammate along for the ride. The duo attack will allow the son of Odin to make two attacks on his turn.  Indomitable will keep Thor and the goats from having to take pushing damage. These abilities open up many strategies for Thor. However, these abilities are subject to outwit and can be countered so don’t count on them being useable each round.

Thors Mighty Chariot dial

Next up, let’s look at the powers.  Thor’s chariot is loaded with powers.  Standard powers include: charge, running shot, super strength, quake, poison, invulnerability, regeneration, toughness, super senses, enhancement and exploit weakness.

But wait!  Thor’s Chariot also has four Special Powers: Butting Heads, Hooves and Horns, Battle-Forged, and Drag.

These special powers give Thor’s Mighty Chariot some interesting options. Butting heads is a powerful way to use force blast; normally force blast pushes a figure away from your character equal to the die roll you make. This power allows you to not only push them away, it forces them to take damage equal to the number of spaces it passes thru as well as any additional damage provided by slamming into a wall. This could be devastating!  I’m guessing we may see an errata on this power.

Hooves and Horns is pretty straight forward.  It grants Blades and Claws but with an interesting twist. You get to decide if you want to replace the damage after you make the roll.  This is enough to make Wolverine cry with envy.  Battle-forged is a combo power of impervious and defend.  Impervious protects Thor and Defend makes him more of a team player.

Drag is interesting. Automatically breaking away from opponents is always nice, but being able to take them with you while causing them to take damage, that’s just plain nasty!

Thor’s Mighty Chariot also has two traits. The first trait states this character must start its base completely in the starting area. It can also make ranged attacks to any character it can draw a line of fire to.  Lastly, it can carry up to two friendly characters when using the carry ability.

The second trait allows this character to destroy any walls or blocking terrain adjacent to it. You do this at the start of your turn as a free action - handy indeed. This can be a good way to get the drop on an unsuspecting opponent who thinks they are safe behind a wall.

Spider BuggyThis character also has the following keywords: Asgardian, Deity, and Vehicle. So his choice of teammates is sort of limited, but with characters like the warriors 3 and Asgardian warriors coming soon, it won’t be long ‘til Thor has plenty of good company. This is the first character to posses the vehicle keyword.  I’m guessing there could be some interesting vehicle’s coming our way in the future. Make way for the spider buggy!

Ok, so on to pros and cons.

The pros: Thor’s Mighty Chariot has 17 clix of life and solid combat values. Powers and abilities like: transporter, defend and enhancement make him a possible team player in bigger games. Combine his 8 range with running shot or the transporter ability, and he is just as effective at range as he can be in close combat. His damage never goes below a 3.  So in most cases, Thor is going to be able to damage even the most impervious of foes.

The cons: It cost 500 points to field this puppy. So in a 500 point game, Thor and the goats are on their own. He is subject to Outwit as he does not possess the power cosmic team ability or any thing that will protect him from outwit. Thor’s Chariot is also susceptible to character with the stealth power.  His transport ability and powers like charge and running shot can help him deal with stealth; it will just take a bit of planning is all.

Overall, I would say Thor’s Mighty Chariot seems very playable for its point value. In games of 600 or more, he can be the primary attacker and still offer support to his team mates. In a 500 point game he is like putting all your eggs in one basket, but its one heck of a nice basket!

Your Comments:
why would you want to use b/c/f when it hits with a 9 to begin with?

@gethralkin i have the chariot and my friend has the world's finest. most of the time world's finest wins.

yeah, i played in a 500 point tourny and beat it with a mixed gotham city team, betwean batman from JL and robin from CR with there outwit and two-face and the riddlers masterminding the street thugs, i didnt even lose one figure.

I'd like to see TMC go up against the World's Finest. That would be an interesting one-on-one (or is that one-on-two?) ultimate duel.

Butting Heads shouldn't require actual eratta. Knockback damage only occurs when the affected character hits blocking terrain or a wall (or the ground if a non-flyer on elevated). Targets of Butting Heads with Charge, doublebase, the Giant Size ability or Colossal abilities won't ever be affected, and those with Combat Reflexes won't take any damage.

Playing against a Batman's allies team could be hard other than that seems solid

I'm never very excited about colossal clix, this being the exception since it also heralded in the long awaited "return" of clix. I think they're cool to own for the sculpts. World's Finest being my fav, Dark Phoenix close second. This being said I haven't heard much favor in regards to the sculpt. The powers are cool though. I'll see for myself in August as soon as Amazon ships mine.

Thank you for the review. I would have liked to see a battle report, how he actually did when you played with him.

Ordered 2 on Amazon.
A friend has one and has played it a few times and is raving about it!

I used the chariot in a 1000-point match last night. Didn't use any feats on it as I just wanted to see what it could do. (The -1 attack penalty from Haymaker does not apply since the chariot has the duo symbol...) Needless to say, the chariot was the biggest target on the map and was the first figure KO'ed. My opponent's Outwitters had it locked down long enough for him to swarm Thor and his goats with some big hitters. There are a lot of good things going for the chariot, though but you'll have to find a way to overcome its susceptibility to Outwit.

This week we're having a 1000 point match with no one under 100 points, wish I had this here for that matchup - win, lose or draw, he'll be a lot of fun to field. Awesome article.

i will be playing him as soon as i receive him. we have a 1000 pt. match coming up soon. i hope i can get him. and if neca really takes over, we can expect sculpts like this in abundance. woo-hoo.

thanks, Rob

The Chariot has possibilities, but I am not a fan of introducing vehicles into the game. It is just another thing to confuse new players and make the game even more complicated than it already is. However, it is a nice sculpt and I wouldn't mind owning one even if I never get the chance to play it.

I like the review; can't wait for my figure to arrive! I'm still a little confused on that ranged attack trait. It states: "...may make ranged combat attacks against any opposing characters it [can draw] a line of fire to." First of all, doesn't any ranged attack work that way? You can't make *any* ranged attack without LoF, yeah? Also, does that mean the Chariot can fire out of adjacency? Good news: it seems to read that it can make a ranged attack to an adjacent character! Lastly, I agree with the others: in a 500-point match, Thor gets tossed, even with Regen. Against Worlds Finest? toss the dice--who connects first? But, man-oh-man.....what a sculpt! I cannot wait for my next Myths & Legends match!

I think my only real and very small problem is that it doesn't have Power Cosmic for a 500pt single figure. Granted it does have Indomitable but Power Cosmic is the power perfect for "god-level" figures and this character definately fits that bill. That's my only sore point in a fantastic looking piece...can't wait to play him sometime in the future.

I actually dig the enhancement. Imagine who those two passengers on this ride could be and then start thinking of how you could use that enhancement! Put Winter Soldier on that ride and witness a 70 point character making a 6 damage attack at range only to be whisked away by the chariot. I like the possibilities.

I realy like his dial, although I dont understand the enhancement. Great Review!

Pretty cool. It will be interesting to see how the Mighty Chariot plays with many of the Asgardian generics in the set.

There's a few feats that could be great on the Mighty Chariot, too - Armour Piercing for the Poison, Drag, Butting Heads, Sidestep for duo attacks, possibly Whirlwind for Butting Heads, and of course Haymaker.

I wish that the Mighty Chariot was a giant, just so that we'd have a figure with special icons on every combat value. :D

He's spent his points on defend, and the ability to carry 2 allies so you know you don't want to play him alone. This is strictly for 600 points and up.

Posted by: mr-coffin on 7/29/2009 9:08:55 AM
Don't forget the awesome extra on the FB still doesn't knockback chargers!
And Enhancement is a waste of a power in a game where yhou only have Thor!

Great article!
I think it's an amazing piece, if not for the size alone. It will be fun to play. Hopefully it will be available to the rest of the world so we can play with the chariot too!

Posted by: Henk on 7/29/2009 4:12:30 AM
yeah Its pretty much established that Thor's mighty chariot is fairly boned in a 500 point match.

Loved the Article its nice tidy and a great reference.

I thinks its pretty frail for its cost but what the heck, it looks fun to play and heck I wouldn't mind having one displayed on my shelf. :) this easily is one of the BEST sculpts in clix I've ever seen.
