Here's how: The first person to answer this question wins the map (we'll ship anywhere in the world)!
------------
You come to the end of the path, and see two caves -- one to the left and one to the right. There is Guardian standing next to left cave, and an identical Guardian standing next to the right cave. You see a small sign that says the following:

"One cave will bring you freedom and the other cave will bring you immediate death.

You may choose just one of these Guardians and ask just one question. However, one of the Guardians always tells the truth, and the other Guardian always lies (and we're not going to tell you which is which)."

------------

What is the correct question to ask the Guardian? Post the correct answer below and win!

And don't forget to check out the KC TRINITY SALE!

Your Comments:
ask the left what the right would say and pick the opposite

Ask the one on the left what the guardian on the right would recommend as the path to take... and choose the opposite. If the left is the liar, he'll say it's the bad path. If the left is the truth-speaker, he'll still point to the bad one.

The Left

Ask one guardian: "what will the other guardian answer to which gate IS safe?" And then you always choose the other door.

Posted by: EdTenerife on 10/10/2010 2:13:09 PM
you stab one of them and ask him if it hurt. If he says no you know he is the one who lies... ala haley from oots

Posted by: 12q on 10/9/2010 1:40:31 PM
Ask both is there a safe way through either of these caves the one who always lies will say no and because you know one cave has a safe passage you will know that that guardian is the one who must lie so then just ask the other one which cave is the safe one

This is why my labyrinths always contain a third guardian, who stabs people who ask clever questions.

Is your mom as ugly as you are or was daddy the King of Fugly?

Posted by: Gary-O on 10/8/2010 11:02:08 AM
@d_knight7: You are the first to answer correctly, so you win the map!

@James Grery: You answered just 58 seconds after d_knight7. Since it's so close, I'm going to award you a free map too! That's right, 2 map winners today!

Everyone else: Make sure you check out the eBay auction. And if you think the map is awsome, check out the Miniature Market link. You might be eligible for free shipping!

If you're going to correct someone, it's always best to know what you're talking about.

Take an example where the left cave is the safe cave.

You ask a guardian "If I ask the other guardian which is the safe cave, what would they say?"

If it's a truth teller he would truthfully tell you that the other guardian will say the right cave (as the other guardian lies lies).

If it's the liar he will tell you the other guardian will say the right cave (because he's lying).

So you just take the opposite cave to whatever they say.

Back to DM school with you.

yay for Labyrinth references

ask of either guardian, "What would your answer be if I asked you if your path leads to freedom?"
If the man says "Yes", then the path leads to freedom, if he says "No", then it does not. The reason is fairly easy to understand, and is as follows:
If you ask the guardian if their path leads to freedom, they will answer truthfully, with "yes" if it does, and "no" if it does not. They will also answer this question truthfully, again stating correctly if the path led to freedom or not.
If you ask the knave if their path leads to freedom, they will answer falsely about their answer, with "no" if it does, and "yes" if it does not. However, when asked this question, they will lie about what their false answer would be, in a sense, lying about their lie. They would answer correctly, with their first lie canceling out the second.
This question forces the guardian to say a truth about a truth, and the knave to say a lie about a lie, resulting, in either case, with the truth.

you got the riddle wrong you need to ask BOTH of them the same Question.
you need to ask "what door will the other Guardian say is the unsafe door?"
both will tell you the same thing and you go with the other door.
(one will lie and one will tell the truth)

other then being a DM for the last 15 years I also looked it up to make sure you got it wrong.

Another question would be "Are you the only Guardian?"

Posted by: d_knight7 on 10/8/2010 10:42:13 AM
Ask the Guardian "Which entrance will the other Guardian say I should take?"

Posted by: Brian Boyd on 10/8/2010 10:41:25 AM
As the others have said, ask one which one the other guard would tell us to take... and take the opposite one.

Posted by: miraclo on 10/8/2010 10:41:17 AM
Ask either Guardian this question: "Which cave would the OTHER Guardian point me to?" Then, choose the "wrong" cave. Instant freedom.

Another question would be "Are you the only Guardian?"

If I were to ask the other guard which door leads to freedom, what would he say?

Posted by: James Geary on 10/8/2010 10:37:55 AM
I would ask one "If I were to ask the other guardian which was the right cave to take, what would they say?"
