HeroClix 2016 Changes

02-05-2016: We've got an official WK update on this matter:

Greetings HeroClix Fans,

We would like to thank you for your feedback on visible dials. Below you’ll find a revised design with the dial on the back of the card.

XXXXX

Also the rules for use will be changed so that in game, the player playing the figure will be able to reference the dial but the opponent cannot view the back of the card that contains the dial. Special powers will be on the side of the card without the dial. We also moved some of the information that may be referred to by opponents to the front.

Now – a little bit about this process of communicating with you. Part of our transparency is that you are going to see some ideas that do have some wiggle room (not all the time, but sometimes), and our goal is to give you the logic behind them in a fully formed and considered fashion.  Did we think we’d be moving ahead with the original idea when we posted it? Yes. Do we think it would be better for the game long term for the card to be visible throughout a turn? Yes, but of course we can’t be 100% sure.

Part of being good business stewards is to listen to the people who aren’t at the table, so a lot of our consideration also involves players that are not easily accessible (players that never joined and might in the future, or perhaps players that have left the game).  But as we said in the original post, we do understand the delays that might occur with the original proposal and the seriousness of this decision, thus this change in direction.

This middle ground we hope will allow new players to not worry about piloting the team they are controlling. It will hopefully give them the feeling that memorization is not the key to excelling at the game.  We hope it lessens the burden for existing players to enjoy the game, and provides freedom for casual players to keep the dial unavailable for their home games.

We also want to reiterate that there is a lot we are looking to improve, for new players and existing, regarding the rulebook, PAC and other documentation. We are committed to trying to improve all aspects for new players and look forward to what we believe will be much less controversial changes to come.

Thank you again,

– The WizKids Team

Your Comments:
This is problematic. If your opponent knows you are on the last click he may chose to attack with a minor piece rather than his big bad, because he knows he only has to get 1 damage not 2 or 3 damage. This really changes the entire game.

Posted by: kenC on 12/3/2016 5:54:30 AM
BTW for anyone who didn't know dials will now be on the back of the card not the front.

Posted by: TonyPark123 on 3/28/2016 5:57:24 PM
I do not like the idea of the visible dials. Too much game time will be spent looking at each others cards to see whether or not a certain amount of damage will be a KO or knock them off a certain power. For instance, whether I allocate my RCE increases to attack or damage will no longer be an uncertainty. Will you be providing two cards for each character-- one for me and one for my opponent to reference. What do you do with all the old clix in a match given very few casual tournaments even restrict you to modern figures? Not a good idea at all.

Posted by: RandyH on 3/7/2016 6:19:40 AM
This new feature will ruin any effects that characters have (60's Riddler "Riddle Me This", Grandmaster "Shall we Play a Game?", etc...) which make your opponent guess about the abilities or values on the character... Sure, they may not look at the card when the power/ability is used, but they can study it in expectation.

Adding the dial to the card adds no benefit to the game, it dumbs it down.

Posted by: MrThatGuy on 2/21/2016 6:24:12 AM
So, will characters with plenty of traits and unique powers have all the text crammed onto one side of the card or will they create little booklets like the Anti-Monitor and Dr. Manhattan card?

Posted by: Kragnorak on 2/11/2016 12:53:14 PM
I hope they clean up the wording on some of the abilities and rules, but based on the example card I'm going to go with NO.

Posted by: Bliss on 2/10/2016 2:40:22 PM
And to think that i used to complain that Heroclix lacked the surprise factor. Now dials are public? Useful but underwhelming, like pokegens having all the same stats or playing Yugioh if both players keep their hands face up in the table.

Posted by: Player2 on 2/10/2016 12:43:18 PM
I've been playing since the very beginning, the age of pre card. Feats was an awesome game mechanic to modify a figure to your liking with requirements meat; then the character cards which basically eliminated the feat card, well done also. I'm just trying to figure out which miniature superhero game of the greats that they are competing against. None that I can find. So why fix something that is not broken. Now I do understand the updates as well as rule changes. Every now and then you need something new for your product. They have a great thing going, so why not ask us, the PLAYERS, the ones who read the comics, and know the characters. To lose us the fans of not only the game, but mainly the characters would be a great lose indeed. plus I believe that we are at least the 80% +. So to lose us, would be the beginning of the end for Heroclix.

Posted by: spangdog on 2/7/2016 8:28:28 AM
Much better with the dial on the back! Dodged a bullet there WizKids! I teach the game to under 14s at school all the time. NEW PLAYERS DONT PLAN THAT MUCH!!! Memorising dials wouldn't even occur to them. They just see Wolverine and are happy to know that they pound away up close until they KO.
For us veteran players it will make team building easier though as you'll only have to flip through cards to find the Hulk you were looking for rather than figures too.
And with the dial on the back WK can backtrack again in a years time when this doesn't work without having to ban whole sets from tournament play!
Still I am overall against as it removes a level of skill from the game.

Posted by: MantisWarrior on 2/6/2016 3:03:00 PM
As a judge and new player teacher I personally don't think this will improve the game in any positive way. First new players already have a problem grasping what powers are available to their clix, reading a dial takes practice, if you throw the whole dial at them they will get confused as to what they can use. Secondly, it will stall out tournament play as players will be passing cards back and forth more often to strategize based on the upcoming dials rather than the threat on the map.
I'm against the redesign

Posted by: Rab4630 on 2/5/2016 7:22:30 AM
only real advantage to having the dial on the card I can see is that it levels the playing field against those who memorize dials and thus end up having a severe advantage.

Posted by: Grim on 2/5/2016 5:51:32 AM
I cannot think of a worse idea than printing the combat dial on the card. A huge part of the game is not necessarily knowing what is on the next click of a dial. Do I push this turn and risk losing my outwit? Do I have one or two clicks of regen at the end of the dial? And any player knows how we react when you can accidentally see the red KOs coming up next! Knowing the next click is huge and will completely change the game. Plus, how much smaller is the printing going to get on the character cards to accommodate the dial (old guy eyes here!)? And finally, as already mentioned, typos will guarantee to cause all kinds of problems. Btw, you don't have to memorize the clix dials, you may choose to do so if that is part of your gaming strategy. I think adding the dials to the cards is a very, very, very bad idea. Please, Wizkids, don't go there!!!!!

Posted by: Illiniwek on 2/5/2016 5:29:37 AM
about the new cards....I say fine to redo them but keep the dial off the card! If wizkids want to put dials on the cards it should be only print and play and keep the other cards without the dial in the box. Only reason it is good to have dial on the card, when there is a mistake on the dial and players want to have the right dial in front of them. and if that happen people could go to print and play. beside that the whole idea is bad! What do you think about this idea? 2 sets of cards one in the box without the dial and another set on wizkids website for print and play with the dial? That way if some one really want it they can print it up.

Posted by: Malcolm Rush on 2/5/2016 5:25:08 AM
And halo action clix sucked... All their dials were weak and crappy I mean masterchief had like a 15 defense... And action clix wasn't nearly as popular as heroclix... Only die hard halo fan boys play action clix! Wiz kids here me now IM DONE WITH PLAYING CLIX... You have killed the spirit, and taking away the bases is gonna take EVERYTHING I loved about clix....

Posted by: bardock on 2/5/2016 12:51:56 AM
It was bad enough we my opponents asked to see my card so they can read my special powers to see if they wanted to outwit them... And now they get to see EVERYTHING!!!way to go wizkids (rolls eyes)

Posted by: bardock on 2/5/2016 12:43:39 AM
Keep in mind that as of right this minute, looking at your dial and your next clix combat values is illegal during a game and grounds for disqualification.
Pretty soon being able to look at all of your dials and all of your opponents dials is going to be the main part of the strategy of playing.
That's a MAJOR change to the core gameplay.

Posted by: ChronoFett on 2/4/2016 7:54:26 PM
From now on, before I attack any opponent figures, I'm going to ask you to see all your cards, then calculate my damage and what click number they will be on and what powers they will have if I successfully attack them.

I will choose my target and attack based entirely on the dial showing on the card. I just don't think that's how Heroclix should be played.

Posted by: ChronoFett on 2/4/2016 7:51:39 PM
Hmmm, not sure about these changes. I do like the idea of making maps matter though. None of these changes mean a Damn if resources stay overpowered though.
