Pick a Card: Spidey
(Secret Invasion)
Eric "Slade Wilson" Schaen
08/03/2009

Welcome to another article of Pick a Card. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pick a Card; in this article I pick a character and make some feat suggestions that make good sense for the character and increase their usefulness in the game. That being said lets get to it.

This time we’re going to be looking at Spider-man from Secret invasion. Let’s have a look at the dial shall we.

Once you get past the fact that it’s a hideous sculpt, there is some good stuff here. He comes with lots of leap/climb, super senses and combat reflexes. Also he has the jaw dropping (or breaking) special power web punch.

At 50 points what’s not to love? So now that the character review is over with, let’s talk some feats. First up I like… wait make that love.. the lunge feat.  He meets the Prerequisites: Close Combat Expert or Leap/Climb through his whole dial. So with lunge your Spidey gains some mobility and can also break away and attack all in the same turn. This is a great feat if played correctly. I have caught many opponents unaware by having a flier like the Human Torch carry Spidey in close, then on Spidey’s turn move him in and attack with the web punch.

HeroClix World Spiderman dial

Lunge (5 pts)
Prerequisites: Close Combat Expert or Leap/Climb
Choose a Character. When the character is given an action, but before it makes a close combat attack, it can break away automatically and move up to 2 squares.

Endurance (5 pts)
Prerequisites: {fist} and {starburst}
Choose a character. When the character would be dealt pushing damage, you can instead choose to deal no damage to the character and put an endurance token on this card. If there are endurance tokens on this card when the character is given an action, after the action resolves, roll a d6. On a result of 1 or 2, deal the character unavoidable damage equal to the result plus the number of tokens on this card, then remove all tokens from this card.

Loner (5 pts)
Prerequisites: Point value 100 points or less.
Choose a character. If no other friendly character shares any of the character's keywords (or this character has no keywords), modify this character's defense value by +1 when this character has a clear line of fire to an opposing character 6 or fewer squares away. Only one character on a force can be assigned this feat.

Vault ( 3pts)
Prerequisites: Combat Reflexes or Leap/Climb
Choose a character. After the character resolves a close combat action, it may be placed in any square in which it may legally be placed adjacent to a target of the action at the same elevation as the target.

Next up how about the Endurance feat.  The Prerequisites are {fist} and {starburst} so Spidey is go to go here. This is a great way to web punch for 2 turns in a row to possibly deal a whopping 12 damage, without taking push! Now imagine if you were to perplex his damage with Mr. Fantastic for 10 to 20 damage in 2 turns YEEEOWWCH!

Next up is a feat I suggest only if you are not playing a theme team; Loner. The prerequisites here are to be a character under 100 points, no problem here. With this, Spidey could be an 18 defense with super senses, or a 20 defense in close when on his combat reflexes clix. Again this feat is only 5 points.

If you are playing a theme then I suggest Vault for 3 points. The prerequisites are Combat Reflexes or Leap/Climb. Notice the word “resolves” in other words whether your close combat attack succeeds or fails you can still use this feat. This can be a great way to move Spidey out of the way of a ranged attacker you positioned to nail that character that is tied up fighting with Spidey.  Or if your opponent sends someone in to back up the character you were beating on, Spidey can keep some space between them without having to leave the fight.

So there you have it, you can use any of these feats, or heck go crazy and use them all and it will only cost you another 18 points. Just remember this version of Spider-man works best as a secondary attacker so don’t lead with him. Instead bring him in when the time is right and let the pain begin!

Special tip: If you hate the sculpt on this dial simply substitute a sculpt you do like in its place. I used the ultimate spider-man sculpt with the brick background from the DC Origin's QUESTION. I glued Spidey’s hand to the top of the base, now on my spider-man he is hand springing off of a structure and firing a webline. It looks so cool!

Your Comments:
If you're good at painting, try adding the Handful of Heroes Spider-Man figure to the lamppost; it looks great!

Me, I removed the pole entirely, glued the figure to the base and gave it an India-ink wash to darken the red (and effectively "paint-in" the lines). Doesn't look bad.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts all. Im glad you like the article!

Oh, and I forgot to mention this...my favorite thing about SI Spidey is his point cost. Because he is only 4-bits, he is easily overlooked as opponents go after the big figs. Meanwhile, he can really really ruin somebody's day.

Terrible, terrible sculpt. We call it the Hasbro Spider-Man, but man, that guy can flat out play. I ripped off the Fantastic Four spider-man and glued him on one of my SI bases. Now, I have the ultimates Spider-man and the a couple of other even older ones that will go on the other SI bases when it is time to do a clone war game.

Great call on the feats, by the way...I agree with every single one of them, especially Lunge. I had a game not too long ago where I was able to use the Web punch to lunge, attack and KO a fig, then lunge and attack a second fig. It broke up my opponents' formation and he had no idea it was going to happen.

Loved the article, could throw a pounce on him too. He wouldn't get to use web-punch but would give him a lot of mobility! :P

One of the players at my venue said it looks like it should be on a kids birthday cake.

Great article Slade!

Probably the best of the Spidermen, but the sculpt is HORRID! Great review

Good Review as always...I'm glad you included that "If you ARE playing a theme team" because I was a little confused that after yout alked about playing him with Mr. Fantastic you'd stick loner on him......

Anyway Yah good review but I'd personally only stick the tinier feats on him so, as another poster said , make him less obvious of a target, so probably charge/pounce lite (Lunge) and Vault.....for the fun of it.

I like the piece but I'm not sure I'd really put feats on him. I think part of what he has going for him is his low cost and the fact he would be underestimated easily. More often than not putting feats on a figure draws attention to them. Personally I wish you didn't have to announce feat cards, at least ones that apply only to the character using it. If I say there's a feat on someone and they usually get wiped before making use of it. It's like painting a bullseye on their head.
